Alejandro Vidal (born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain) lives and works between Berlin, Barcelona and India. Working across different media, with a particular emphasis on photography, his practice challenges the conventions and orthodoxies of the photographic medium. Combining images appropriated from the internet with unconventional uses of photography, Vidal adopts an irreverent approach to the medium, questioning established modes of image-making and representation.
His work engages with post-vandalism, exploring the unstable relationship between images, power and collective behaviour. Through strategies of misdirection, displacement and visual ambiguity, he constructs fictional and experiential spaces in which social and political tensions emerge indirectly, unsettling the meanings conventionally attached to images, objects and identities.
His images often occupy a moment between anticipation and aftermath: situations in which an event seems about to happen or has just taken place, while its causes and consequences remain outside the frame. Rather than unfolding through a linear narrative, they create an atmosphere of suspense, transforming the possibility of an event into a space of projection, uncertainty and confrontation.
By displacing forms from their established functions and reversing their familiar meanings, Vidal exposes the systems of power and representation through which reality is organised. Drawing on the visual languages of urban unrest, protest, youth subcultures and techno-rave culture, his work explores the frictions between individual and collective experience, resistance and control, transgression and institutional order.
